June 08 Bienvenidos de Cuba I made a whirlwind tour of Havana, Cuba. My first visit to Cuba and my first visit to the Caribbean this century. I didn't see any of the Castro brothers, though I hit most of the tourist sites. There doesn't seem to be a lot going on in Havana...little commerce, almost no traffic, not that many tourists, empty shelves in government stores. Also, lots of old cars, which was pretty cool.
Next trip, this Summer. ![]() ![]() ![]() April 18 Easter, April, 2009, Asia, Indochina I've made another journey to Asia, this time a different destination (so I'll be adding another country onto my list!). The new thing to visit this time was the Kingdom of Cambodia. I'm here in Cambodia for a few more hours.
I was lucky enough to cross Angkor Wat off my list of things to see. I took about 400 pictures of the temple, and I only saw about one half of the things you're supposed. Anyways, I've set up a separate album for the photos, I'll add more as I download more. Every temple was something new...whether bas-reliefs, the ruins of a giant reclining Buddha, towering stone towers, aspara dancers carved into stone or the giant heads at Bakon temple. For my next trip, there still a few places and things left to do there, the Elephant Temple, or the dawn/dusk over the temple itself. Phnom Penh is a pleasant tropical stop too. I visited the usual tourist attractions, plus a stop at the Killing Fields.
I was also lucky enough to make a stop in Beijing, Malaysia and, if the generals allow, I'll be in Bangkok in a few hours.
Enjoy the pictures and when I get home, I'll make some comments or even add a few more pictures!
December 29 Asia-2008I've now paid the last of my 2008 visits to China. I see from looking at my passport, I've been in China 7 times, Malaysia twice, Vietnam 3 times, Japan twice, Philippines 1 time, plus assorted airport visits to Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.
I noticed a picture from a 1998 visit to Guanzhou, the Haizhu Bridge I think and, next one from this year. You don't see many bicycles anymore.
Happy 2009!
October 15 October, 2008-USA, PRCGreeting from northern China!
I've been busy here in Shenyan (沈阳)(盛京)(奉天)/Mukden/, paying a visit to a faux peasant village while eating some real peasant food. Before that, of course, I sampled some of the excesses that Las Vegas has to offer. I've been lucky enough to look around Shenyang a bit, the zoo, and the Shenyang Imperial Palace (沈阳故宫)a surprisingly nice place, I'll be off to Beijing in a couple of hours, more details to follow from there and enjoy my photographs in the meantime!
I was pretty busy in Beijing, but I did manage to visit the Olympic Stadium. I'm devoting another photo album to my visit there.
September 18 September, 2008I went for an interview in Blaine, Washington for the Nexus pass. Now, I won't have to wait in line anymore...yippee!
Plus, a few pictures from my journey to Victoria.
July 28 July-2008 to August-2008As is my custom, I am taking a Summer holiday, this to be my first Summer expedition to Vietnam, though there are four and a half countries on my itinerary-Shanghai's Nanjing Road was my first stop, followed by the transfer of airplanes in Japan. The food is, as I have probably said on these pages great. Interesting, always fresh and plentiful.
It's quite cool and don't even need the air conditioning. I paid a visit to the Caravelle, an historic old place. You can see it from the sky here.
I finished my expedition in Nha Trang, so back to the relative bustle of Saigon (Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh or Sài Gòn).
I will post more pictures here as I take them...
After a stop over in Malaysia, I'm now home. I've posted pictures from the journey, please enjoy!
Cheers. June 26 June, 2008I'm back in China...this time to the province with the best food and most interesting language!
Enjoy my pictures...I have a few more stops before my journey ends so please check back.
April 29 April-May, 2008I'm back in the Middle Kingdom.
Please see my pictures!
April 30-May 1,
here in Ningbo, I'm hoping to find Chiang Kai-Shek's birthplace!
May 2-5
Beijing, enjoying the 北京烤鸭 (Peking Duck)!
May 5
PEK T3, Terminal 3. Very nice, interesting design.
February 22 New Years in China!I've posted a few pictures from my current sojourn in the Middle Kingdom. Yesterday was the last day of the New Years, so even here in Shanghai there were lots of fireworks and apparent celebrations.
I'll go to Zhejiang tomorrow, so more pictures to come!
P.S. Hangzhou, Zhejiang has come and gone. I paid a visit to a most interesting theme park, I got to dress like a Mongol warrior and an emperor. Lots of fun!
P.P.S. I had one interesting bottle of beer, West Lake beer. (no, JT, it's not as good as Tsingtao!). However, the beer proudly advertised itself as "Formaldehyde Free". Hmm, I'll make sure to check beer's ingredients next time.
January 06 2007-2008 I am on another trip that's too long. anyways, please enjoy the photographs and happy 2008 to all! October 06 Vietnam! (and China, Taiwan, Thailand, Korea, Singapore)Welcome to my latest photo album! I'm sorry, I haven't updated for a long while. But, recently, I have travelled to Hanoi and Halong Bay, on the U.N's world heritage list.
I made the obligatory stops in China, Taiwan, Thailand and Taiwan (Singapore too, I think) to transit
Please enjoy my photographs! and check back for updates...my trip isn't over yet!
July 23 Viva Las Vegas (Part II)!I used to travel a lot to Las Vegas. I didn't go there much for about 12 years but this year, I've been twice. I entered a baccarat (punto banco) tournament. I didn't win, but came within one card of winning.
Anyways, Las Vegas was hot 106° on one day
check out my photographs! July 08 My latest AdventureThis latest voyage of mine featured a trip to the Inner Mongolian Grasslands, desert and Genghis Khan's purported tomb. But, I can't forget Chinese Tea Culture, Chinese Traditional Music, Mongolian hospitality, the unique scenery or the great Mongolian Folk Dancing!
Enjoy the videos!
Unfortunately, it's back to work today!
June 26 Mark's MapI have linked to a map showing the countries I've visited! Of course, this system takes a slightly different method of counting countries as I have on my list here. For instance, I don't count colonies but I do count such entities as East Germany and Yugoslavia.
April 09 South East Asia-Part 2, Malaysia...The latest part of my expedition found me in Kuala Lumpur. Home on the 10th with, I hope, some pictures to follow! April 07 South East Asia-Part 1, Thailand...I just finished a few days on the beach of Thailand, Andaman Sea...
next, it's off to Malaysia! March 22 Kamloops KaravanI made it up to the old homestead...cold, snowy, just like home.
Enjoy the pictures!
oh, yes, thanks...I did buy a new camera January 19 Viva Las Vegas!I'm back in Nevada, Las Vegas. it's cold but sunny. We're at Bally's, which is in a great location, by Ceasar's Palace, Paris and the Flamingo.
So far, so good! I love having steak and eggs at 3 a.m.!
more details and some pictures to follow
there is the saying, of course, "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas"...so, there's only so much more I can say! but, I had a successful run at the craps table, making my holiday quite profitable!
lucky me...
I took a trip to Boulder Dam. 30 miles from Las Vegas.
P.S. Boulder City is the only city in Nevada without legalized gambling.
November 13 Japan, Vietnam and, soon, ChinaI arrived in Japan and took the long, long ride to the city. The flight is short, compared to my Chinese expeditions but the train ride to the city is always exhausting.
I posted a few pictures of my cousin, his family and me. I'll be off to Vietnam in a few hours and I hope I can check in then.
November 14...I saw the new airport in Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi). So much walking and it reminds me of a subway tunnel! November 21...returning. 35 minute walk to transfer and 15 minutes in security line. Then, then, get on a bus to go to the airplane!! Why not just do that at the old airport?
Still,November 14, just arrived in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City. It's much nicer and cleaner than I could have expected. But, I'm now a millionaire for the first time ever in my travels. I took some money, 2,000,000 Dong. I didn't sight see yet today, I'll do that tomorrow. More to follow!
November 15...I added Vietnam to my visited countries list! The first addition in over two years.
November 16, 17, Various tours and sites around Ho Chi Min City. Including the War Crimes Museum apparently committed by the USA. Also, some old war planes and armaments. I was also wondering where the museum was for the numerous war crimes committed by the North, as well as the ethnic cleaning of chinese minority and the wholescale imprisonment of political prisoners and religious leaders, but I digress.
November 19...George W. Bush visited Saigon. I even got a special pass for the occasion since my hotel was across the street from his! Great keepsake! I'll scan it when I get home. I guess my invitation for dinner was lost in the mail though...
November 19-21. At the beach. Relaxing and happy. Nicer for the most part than Thailand, I think. Fewer tourists, cleaner, cheaper maybe? fewer mendicants, in fact, almost none at all.
I'll do an English version in a couple of days together with some pictures!
This just in...a few pictures here now!! The captions didn't get transferred. I'll do those later too.
今天, 我和我朋友去黄河。实际上这叫做黄河是因为河是黄色。
I'm back from Inner Mongolia and China. I have always been a great fan of the Khan family, their bellicose and warrior skills are legendary. They also managed to conquer much of Asia. I suppose, though, with the passage of time, Ghengis Khan wasn't able to hold on to his influence. In any case, it was always a dream of mine to visit Mongolia...this I did in 1999 and this time, I was able to visit Inner Mongolia, where Ghengis Khan and his family had a great more influence and historical significance.
One other highlight was my visit to the Yellow River. I managed to convince my friend, Ellen, to take me there! and I got to eat Yellow River fish and walk around in the muck that is the Yellow River. (There's a reason they call it the "Yellow River", specifically, the water is a yellowish muddy colour.) Thank you Ellen!
Also, I was hoping to see my paraphernalia relating to Ghengis Khan, including his burial site (it's near Huhehaote/Hohhot), but I learned when I got there that he was buried by some 800 soldiers, who were then executed to ensure that his burial site would remain secret. At least, that's one theory. Another has a river being diverted over his burial site to ensure it would remain secret. |
