Easter, April, 2009, Asia, Indochina

I've made another journey to Asia, this time a different destination (so I'll be adding another country onto my list!). The new thing to visit this time was the Kingdom of Cambodia.  I'm here in Cambodia for a few more hours.
I was lucky enough to cross Angkor Wat off my list of things to see. I took about 400 pictures of the temple, and I only saw about one half of the things you're supposed.  Anyways, I've set up a separate album for the photos, I'll add more as I download more. Every temple was something new...whether bas-reliefs, the ruins of a giant reclining Buddha, towering stone towers, aspara dancers carved into stone or the giant heads at Bakon temple.  For my next trip, there still a few places and things left to do there, the Elephant Temple, or the dawn/dusk over the temple itself. Phnom Penh is a pleasant tropical stop too. I visited the usual tourist attractions, plus a stop at the Killing Fields.
I was also lucky enough to make a stop in Beijing, Malaysia and, if the generals allow, I'll be in Bangkok in a few hours.
Enjoy the pictures and when I get home, I'll make some comments or even add a few more pictures!

Asia-2008

I've now paid the last of my 2008 visits to China. I see  from looking at my passport, I've been in China 7 times, Malaysia twice, Vietnam 3 times, Japan twice, Philippines 1 time, plus assorted airport visits to Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.
I noticed a picture from a 1998 visit to Guanzhou, the Haizhu Bridge I think and, next one from this year.  You don't see many bicycles anymore.
Happy 2009!

October, 2008-USA, PRC

Greeting from northern China!
I've been busy here in Shenyan (沈阳)(盛京)(奉天)/Mukden/, paying a visit to a faux peasant village while eating some real peasant food.  Before that, of course, I sampled some of the excesses that Las Vegas has to offer. I've been lucky enough to look around Shenyang a bit, the zoo, and the Shenyang Imperial Palace (沈阳故宫)a surprisingly nice place, I'll be off to Beijing in a couple of hours, more details to follow from there and enjoy my photographs in the meantime!
I was pretty busy in Beijing, but I did manage to visit the Olympic Stadium. I'm devoting another photo album to my visit there.

July-2008 to August-2008

As is my custom, I am taking a Summer holiday, this to be my first Summer expedition to Vietnam, though there are four and a half countries on my itinerary-Shanghai's Nanjing Road was my first stop, followed by the transfer of airplanes in Japan.
The food is, as I have probably said on these pages great.  Interesting, always fresh and plentiful.
It's quite cool and don't even need the air conditioning.  I paid a visit to the Caravelle, an historic old place.  You can see it from the sky here.
I finished my expedition in Nha Trang, so back to the relative bustle of Saigon (Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh or Sài Gòn).
I will post more pictures here as I take them...
After a stop over in Malaysia, I'm now home.  I've posted pictures from the journey, please enjoy!
Cheers.

New Years in China!

I've posted a few pictures from my current sojourn in the Middle Kingdom. Yesterday was the last day of the New Years, so even here in Shanghai there were lots of fireworks and apparent celebrations.
I'll go to Zhejiang tomorrow, so more pictures to come!

P.S. Hangzhou, Zhejiang has come and gone. I paid a visit to a most interesting theme park, I got to dress like a Mongol warrior and an emperor.  Lots of fun!

P.P.S.  I had one interesting bottle of beer, West Lake beer.   (no, JT, it's  not as good as Tsingtao!).  However, the beer proudly advertised itself as "Formaldehyde Free".  Hmm, I'll make sure to check beer's ingredients next time.now, poison free!

Happy year of the Rodent!

新年快乐!
新年快樂!
 สวัสดีปีใหม่!
새해 복 많이 받으세요!
Chúc mừng năm mới!
明けましておめでとう!
for all my Thai, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and Japanese friends, visitors, and others, I wish you have a very happy and prosperous Lunar New Year.  The year of the pig is gone, the year of the Rat is now here.
When is the Lunar New Year determined?  Simply put, it's the second new moon after the winter solstice.  (When is the winter solstice?--The winter solstice occurs at the instant when the Sun's position in the sky is at its greatest angular distance on the other side of the equator from the observer)
Please have a good year!

Summer in Vancouver

Summer in Vancouver is a great place, as long as weather permits.
I have a great view of the annual "celebration of light" fireworks festival in Vancouver.  I tried to take a few pictures, still a bit fuzzy, but I'll try again next time.
also, summer season is barbecue season. There are a few from my latest!

Viva Las Vegas (Part II)!

I used to travel a lot to Las Vegas. I didn't go there much for about 12 years but this year, I've been twice.  I entered a baccarat (punto banco) tournament. I didn't win, but came within one card of winning.

Anyways, Las Vegas was hot 106° on one day Sun.  Still, I got to play in the pool and play some cards.  I hope to return in a few months.
check out my photographs!

Mark's Map

I have linked to a map showing the countries I've visited!  Of course, this system takes a slightly different method of counting countries as I have on my list here.  For instance, I don't count colonies but I do count such entities as East Germany and Yugoslavia.

my new toy...

I believe there's a saying, he with the most toys at the end wins.
Well, I had to buy a new television. 40 inches of unrivalled beauty.
Sony Bravia, way more TV than I need, but you only live once...
P.S. I took a trip to my old university and saw my old graduation photograph!

June 6, 2007

June 6, 2007!  Always the favourite day of the year!
We went to Morton's with the gang and had a great (and expensive!) meal.  Crab, steak, salad and their world famous soufflé.  Hmm, maybe I'll have a similar steak dinner next week too!

Family Visits, Wii Championships, the Master Man

It's been a long time since I last entered something here.  But, this week-end, I visited my sister and her family. so, I'm putting in some pictures from that plus a few other things!  I took my nephew to the library.
It was Steve's birthday but since mine is so close, I got my piece of cake too! My nephew also seems to love smoked oysters!! What a great palate!

Travel? hmm, not for 6-7 weeks, probably off to Medicine Hat in a few weeks and then  back to Asia, or maybe I should try somewhere different? hmm.
More importantly (perhaps?) I got to spend an evening playing Wii...if that were around when I was a boy, wow...I would never have gone outside!!
so, please take a look at my pictures (and, for the bonus round, there are links to videos here!)
